Why Yota Tsuji's MLW Trip Is Worth the Risk

Summary: Opinion. This is our view, not news. NJPW's IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji wrestles Trevor Lee at MLW on Nov. 7, two months before Wrestle Kingdom 21. We think the trip pays off, if he wins.

The quick version

  • Our writers argue Tsuji's MLW debut helps him more than it risks.
  • The facts below come from MLW, PWInsider, OutKick and NJPW. The view is ours.
  • The strongest case against us is injury and a loss before the biggest match of his career.

NJPW's top champion is about to work a non-title match for another company, against a wrestler most NJPW fans have never seen. That deserves a close look.

The facts first

MLW announced on Oct. 16 that NJPW's Yota Tsuji will make his MLW debut at Saturday Night SuperFight on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Cicero Stadium in Chicago. The show is sold out and streams on Veeps. PWInsider lists the match as Tsuji vs. Trevor Lee. OutKick reports it is a non-title match, and that Lee signed with MLW about seven months ago.

Tsuji is the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. NJPW has made him the Wrestle Kingdom 21 main event on Jan. 4, 2027, at the Tokyo Dome, against AEW's Kenny Omega. World Tag League starts Nov. 23, and Tsuji is in A Block with Jeff Cobb.

Lee told OutKick: "I'm looking at this match like kind of like a job interview." He called Tsuji "the top of the top at New Japan."

The view

We think this is a good trip, for three reasons.

First, it puts the IWGP title in front of people who do not watch NJPW. A sold-out Chicago crowd and a pay-per-view audience will see the belt that Tsuji carries into the Tokyo Dome. The best way to build a Wrestle Kingdom main event is to make the champion look like a big deal in new places.

Second, the opponent is right. Lee is a hungry wrestler on an interview, as he says himself. That is a person who will push Tsuji without it feeling like a stunt. Tsuji gets a hard, clean match, and a win looks earned.

Third, the timing is early enough. Saturday leaves about two months before Jan. 4. The calendar in between is busy, but that is also why we would not wait until later.

The best case against us

The risk is real and simple. If Tsuji is hurt in Chicago, NJPW has a problem with its biggest show. A tournament with Cobb, then a Dome main event, leaves little room.

A loss is the other risk. It is a non-title match, so the belt does not change hands. But OutKick notes a Lee pinfall could put him in the conversation for the IWGP title, and a pin on the champion would make headlines. If Tsuji loses, the story of the trip changes.

Where we land

We would take the trip, with one condition: Tsuji wins. If he does, it is a clean showcase. If not, NJPW has handed a rival promotion a talking point two months before the Dome.

What to watch

The result on Saturday, and how Tsuji looks when World Tag League opens on Nov. 23.
