With Roman Reigns turning to the top heel of WWE, who do you see as the next “top guy?”
Internally, the top babyface in WWE right now is Drew McIntyre. Arguments can be made for several names but most, if not all are on the Raw roster. The thing about WWE in 2020 is Vince McMahon does not have a transcendent “face of the company” type talent. Roman Reigns was “chosen” after John Cena but essentially Vince likes to book brand over talent. Some believe this is intentional based on the outside of the ring success of The Rock or John Cena, while others feel it is due to creative missteps. I used to believe in the latter but lately I see the former. Vince has a circle of talent who are “top draws” and others are seen as interchangeable.
Remember that time Donald Trump ate a “Stone Cold” stunner?
I do. Donald Trump was well received when he worked in WWE. This is where politics ruin everything. Trump was an entertaining showman, almost a status symbol when he appeared for WWE. Politics and controversial policies have changed it to the point where many are hesitant to even bring up his name backstage. It is almost like I am the grandpa who remembers, “back in my day.”
How do you feel about indie wrestling promotions doing shows during the pandemic and what tips might you give promoters on how to follow a “gold standard approach” to keep the wrestlers and fans safe?
I am all for shows taking place as long as they can be done safely. Some people believe no shows should be done during the COVID-19 pandemic. Others believe things should be 100% opened up like nothing is going on. I am in the middle. We can walk and chew gum at the same time. On one hand the show must go on but on the other hand, we do not want people getting sick. My tip would be to follow the state and federal guidelines. Make sure workers are tested before performing, space out the crowd and encourage face coverings. There is no reason we cannot have shows and do them safely.
Do you have any thoughts on last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw?
This week’s Raw had a good triple threat match with Braun Strowman, Keith Lee and Sheamus. I also found the stuff with Drew McIntyre, The Fiend, Alexa Bliss and Randy Orton intriguing. WWE is protecting McIntyre well, while progressing things forward with Orton as champion. Other than that, Retribution needs to conclude and hopefully we have seen the end to Jeff Hardy vs. Elias. Three hours remains difficult for WWE to fill creatively and it shows up each and every week.
