The Rock emerging as the new owner of the XFL, along with two business partners, one of whom is his ex-wife Dany Garcia, surprised a lot of people and generated lots of mainstream publicity for the bankrupt football league.
In interviews since The Rock’s investment group submitted the only bid in the auction for the rights to the XFL, The Rock has given full credit to Garcia for coming up with the idea to buy the XFL. The truth, however, is that the idea came from none other than Vince McMahon, who wanted to see the XFL live on in some form after McMahon’s two attempts to launch the spring football league proved unsuccessful.
The Rock’s group fully expected to be the only bidders and had already begun talking to various television networks and steaming services before submitting their bid. Although talks are still in their infancy, and the XFL’s return isn’t even planned until the spring of 2022, NBCUniversal has expressed interest in being the exclusive broadcaster.
The idea is that NBC Sports Network and the recently launched Peacock streaming service would both air the regular season and possibly the playoffs, while the championship game would be on the main NBC network.
