> Opinion. This is our view, not news. WWE will let Club WWE members pick the best performer at the John Cena Classic on Dec. 14. We think that helps the NXT names most.

Opinion. This is our view, not news.

## The quick version

- Our writers argue the live fan vote at the John Cena Classic helps NXT talent more than it hurts.
- The facts below come from WWE and POST Wrestling. The view is ours.
- The strongest case against us is that fans may simply vote for the biggest names.

WWE has not said how the John Cena Classic will be scored, and that is exactly why the plan is worth a closer look. The facts are known. Our read of them is below.

## The facts first

WWE and The Walt Disney Company announced on Nov. 3 that the first John Cena Classic will be held on Monday, Dec. 14, at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida. WWE says it will feature "WWE's biggest names across Raw and SmackDown against the brightest future Superstars from NXT." It will stream live on Netflix as a special edition of Raw.

The top performer of the night will be decided by the audience. WWE says members of Club WWE, its fan membership program, will "vote in real time for their favorite Superstar performance and award the night's top honor." POST Wrestling reports Cody Rhodes is the first name confirmed, and that Cena will appear on SmackDown on Nov. 13, Raw on Nov. 16 and at Survivor Series on Nov. 28 before the event.

WWE has not said how many matches there will be, who else is entered, how votes are counted or what the winner receives.

## The view

The honor goes to a performance, not a person. That wording matters. A vote on the best performance of a night gives a newcomer a way to earn the top honor without needing a win over a veteran. A strong match can still count.

That is a good deal for NXT. It also asks the established stars to work harder than a routine Raw match would, because a live audience is grading them against rising names.

The format also fits the man the show is named for. A vote that rewards what the crowd actually reacts to suits an event with Cena's name on it.

## The best case against us

Fans may simply vote for the best-known name in the building. Club WWE is a membership of dedicated fans, and dedicated fans have favorites. If the vote goes to the biggest star every time, the "performance" wording means little, and NXT talent gets nothing from it. WWE also has not said whether the result is binding or how ties and ballot rules work. If the details are weak, the idea is weak too.

Our answer is that the details are still to come. WWE says more event information will be announced in the coming weeks, and we will judge the plan when we see them.

## What to watch

Watch for the card, the full entry list and the voting rules. Two-day combo tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. ET, with a presale on Thursday, Nov. 12, WWE says.
