The COVID-19 pandemic caused several businesses to be brought to a standstill. This included the indies in professional wrestling. Among several wrestlers who felt the effect of this was Eddie Kingston. Before the pandemic, Kingston always had work as he was booked for several independent circuit events. However, the pandemic left him with no more work and he did not know what to do.
AEW continued to work despite the difficult times and Kingston ultimately signed with the company. He spoke to the New York Post, where he revealed how dire his circumstances were prior to AEW giving him an opportunity to save his professional wrestling career.
“I think probably another month I would have sold the house and moved back to New York and back to my parents’ place until I could get a regular job and, you know, get my own apartment.”
“I just started crying in the car. I didn’t understand why I was crying and my girlfriend was just like, ‘Let it go, let it out because you reached a goal. You did it.’ I was like, damn. I was gonna be broke and homeless and back living with my parents. It hit me then. I just started bawling in the car and apologizing for crying. That whole New York tough guy thing, I can’t let anyone see me cry.”
“I believe God sent my niece and nephew to me not to stop wrestling because he knew good things were gonna happen.”
He was just a month away from hanging up his boots for good. Then he received an opportunity at the TNT Title against Cody Rhodes and it all changed from there.
He is challenging Jon Moxley for the AEW World Title at AEW Full Gear on November 7th in the most important match of his 18-year long career.
