WWE continues to shop the rights to some of their biggest events, including WrestleMania, SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble. While there has been interest from several streaming services, including NBC Universal’s new Peacock streaming service, the offers WWE has received are said to be nowhere near WWE’s asking price.
Public interest in WWE pay-per-view events has taken a noticeable downturn in recent months where WWE has been unable to have fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
WWE’s position in negotiations has been that they will soon be able to have fans in attendance again and interest will return to previous levels. The larger companies that have been interested in the rights aren’t as confident that WWE will have live fans in attendance any time soon, let alone that interest in the pay-per-views will quickly return to what they were.
While WWE had hoped to have the rights to some of their largest events sold in time for SummerSlam to air somewhere other than WWE Network, sources with knowledge of the negotiations have told WrestlingNews.com that the chances of SummerSlam not being on the WWE Network this year are very small.
