It was Paul Heyman’s idea to pair Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler together and put them over during the eight-team Tag Team Turmoil match on last week’s Monday Night RAW, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The match made Roode and Ziggler the number one contenders for the WWE RAW Tag Team Titles, as they’ll face champions Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman in a title match at Clash of the Champions later this month.
According to the Observer, Heyman is a proponent of Roode and wanted to use the opportunity to help him. The feeling is Roode has been slotted as a nobody on the card for so long, the pairing and subsequent win could provide an opportunity to spotlight him.
The future of the Roode/Ziggler pairing after Clash of the Champions is unknown but it’s possible they get a run with the RAW Tag Titles if the main reason to put the titles on Rollins and Strowman was to build to their Universal Championship match, which will also happen at the pay-per-view.
