AJ Styles shared some interesting insight on how Vince McMahon viewed him when he first came to WWE in recent comments made on his Twitch stream.
Styles, who came to WWE after a highly successful career in TNA Wrestling, the independent circuit, ROH and NJPW, explained when you get an opportunity in WWE you hope Vince McMahon is watching and you get a reaction. AJ recalled he got an awesome reaction at Royal Rumble 2016 when he debuted but Vince McMahon thought it was a fluke. He did not even want to put Styles on Raw the next night.
Following his WWE debut at Royal Rumble, Styles went on to face Chris Jericho on Raw that Monday. A match where he went over. He also worked SmackDown against Curtis Axel, a match he also won.
Styles stated Vince still was not impressed and felt like he had guys that could do what he could do. He even told Styles as much. Styles felt the turning point was when he and Vince sat down and Vince told him what he needed him to do. That is when things changed and Styles became a top star.
As for the way Vince views Styles now, he loves him and wishes he would have signed him sooner. We examined Vince McMahon’s philosophy of elevating talent here in the latest installment of Ask WNC.
