WWE’s best storyline IMO is Bray Wyatt with Alexa Bliss. I think they are both nailing it however, do you think Alexa posting pics of her dressed up as Napoleon Dynamite for Halloween or going to Disneyland on Instagram take away from storyline?
When talent first started to get social media accounts about 10 years ago there was a lot of talk on whether or not they should be able to post stuff that was “out of character.” There was even some suggestion WWE would have to approve posts before they were sent out. Nowadays, it is pretty much accepted they are going to post out of character and WWE does not do anything about it. I understand why some fans say this is a draw back but it is the business in 2020. Talent do have the luxury of blaming mischaracterized tweets as a work. For example, if someone is rude to a fan, they can claim they were just being a heel. The same works for when they are in public traveling to shows. At one point some of the old school talent refused to even do social media but even The Undertaker has stepped in and launched his own accounts. Moving forward, social media is just something embraced by society and older fans will have to suspend their disbelief when watching shows. Kayfabe still works on younger fans as it always has and always will. I understand how workers use social media and do not feel it takes away from a storyline.
What is the mood backstage in WWE?
Morale varies by the week and mostly has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been a lot of highs and lows since March and I expect it will continue. Even in a normal year, morale fluctuates but this year anxiety is a lot higher as talent try to work through a pandemic and not only protect their own health but the health of their loved ones. Talent do enjoy the decreased travel schedule but it is also less revenue.
If you were booking AEW would you have booked Full Gear any different?
Full Gear was a good show. I am not going to praise it as the greatest show of all-time but there were a lot of well worked matches. The best match was FTR vs. The Young Bucks for the AEW Tag Team Championship. This had impossible expectations and delivered. The main event saw Moxley retain, which was the right move but I am not into thumbtacks and fake barbed wire in 2020. Too gimmicky for my liking. Many fans feel the cinematic matches have run their course and I agree that was the case with the Elite Deletion. Chris Jericho vs. MJF was slightly disappointing and the show overall was too long. Greater than three hours is too big of a commitment for the viewer. As far as outcomes, there is nothing I can outright criticize.
